Blue Lock will win the U-20 World Cup. We will win the World Cup... no, that's not quite right... I will lead Japan to victory in the U-20 World Cup.

— Isagi's goal[1]

Yoichi Isagi ( (いさぎ) () (いち) Isagi Yoichi?) is the main protagonist of the Blue Lock series.

Isagi is a second-year high school student who played as a forward for the Ichinan High School football team. When he arrived at the Blue Lock facility, he became a member of Team Z for the First Selection. His main goal is to become the world's best striker.

After the Blue Lock Eleven played against the Japan U-20, Isagi is ranked as one of the top players in Blue Lock and plays as an offensive midfielder on Bastard München during the Neo Egoist League.

Unlike his fellow competitors, who were handpicked by Anri Teieri after watching them play, Isagi was chosen personally by Jinpachi Ego himself after seeing him play. Isagi is an ideal candidate for the type of striker Ego strives to create.

Appearance[]

Isagi is a teenager of average height and muscular build, developing a stronger, more defined-looking physique. He has short, dark blue hair that leaves a V-shaped fringe between his deep blue eyes. He has the symmetrical face shape that makes his face slightly attractive.

While attending Ichinan High School, he wore an unbuttoned blazer over a white undershirt and striped tie. Both the Ichinan High jersey and gym uniform are light-colored with black stripes.

At Blue Lock, Isagi wears the standard-issued body suit (black with blue stripes) and tracksuit. During the First Selection, he wore Team Z's blue #11 jersey and Team Z's gray-capped cleats. During Second Selection, he wore Team White's #15 jersey and later switched to red. He then later switched to Team A's black #15 jersey during the Blue Lock Eleven tryouts. lsagi dons an official blue-colored Blue Lock player uniform with the #11, that looks very similar to the ones seen in the first cover spread minus the Japan flag during the Japan U-20 match. As a regular for Team Germany, Isagi wears the red and black with gold stripes Bastard München uniform as #11.

Personality[]

Isagi is easygoing and has a generally friendly, cheery personality, but his simple and innocent habits often get on the nerves of the people around him. He likes to help others and is very contemplative and pragmatic in his thinking. He tends to avoid any childish squabbles among other Blue Lock competitors and tries to be a peacekeeper between his friends and rivals. At the beginning of Blue Lock, Isagi is massively unsure of himself and his skill due to being the second-lowest-ranked player in Blue Lock initially and his conflicting ideas of football. As time goes on, Isagi develops a more assertive presence on and off the field, becoming the foundation for Team Z and garnering the respect of some of the best players in Blue Lock, who mostly have heavily assertive or dominant personalities. As of Third Selection, Isagi has the confidence, charisma, and reputation to talk openly with Rin Itoshi, one of the most talented yet difficult people in the Blue Lock Project.

Initially, Isagi was unsure on how to proceed in Blue Lock due to being taught an ideology during his time in high school that conflicted with what was being promoted in Blue Lock, as well as being unsure on how to be egotistic. However, starting with Team Z's first win and subsequent wins thereafter, Isagi becomes well-acquainted with the rush of victory, and the cold ruthlessness needed to survive in Blue Lock. As times goes on, he becomes willing to step on the plans and dreams of his opponents and teammates in order to score a goal and go further in Blue Lock. When it comes to football, he is ambitious and calculated, willing to change and adapt, to get the right "chemical reactions" out of his teammates, to stay a step ahead of their opponents, and be the best player on the field, staying true to his commitment to becoming the world's best striker. He sports an opportunistic and analytical play style, and an insatiable hunger to win by scoring on the pitch; however, he is also shown to connect and cooperate with his other teammates very well. Importantly, Isagi has often valued and recognized the strengths of others' play, but as he proceeds through Blue Lock, he is able to identify and harness his own strengths to score.

Ever since meeting and losing to Rin, Isagi has been chasing him, attempting to surpass him at every turn. He goes out of his way to get closer to Rin, attempting to copy his cooldown routines and adapting his mindset, in an attempt to get closer to his level. Isagi believes that when he is able to truly surpass Rin, he will be closer than ever to his goal of becoming the best striker in the world. Isagi is still prone to being nervous before big matches such as: During the end of First Selection, the beginning of Third Selection or the Japan U-20 match and was slightly nervous whilst being interviewed after his decisive goal. However, in each case Isagi was able to fully realize his ego, and confidently stake his place among the best in Blue Lock, declaring that he would lead the Japan U-20 to victory in the World Cup. Isagi now doesn't like when someone believes that his achievements are just out of luck and not because of his skills as a player and striker, when he meets Tada, an old teammate from his school, and comments how "lucky" he was to score that goal in the match against Japan U-20, Isagi feels dismayed since Tada had absolutely no idea how much he had to fight every day inside of Blue Lock to get in the position he is currently, yet it does not dismay him for long as it motivates him into returning to Blue Lock and evolving even more.

After the beginning of the Neo Egoist League, Isagi's ego is much more noticeable than before, feeling completely insulted when Yukimiya questioned his decision making a pass called him someone with a small way of thinking. The conversation enraged Isagi and provoked him to the point of almost getting into a fight with Yukimiya inside of the dressing room. He is also entirely capable of showing frustration when things doesn't go like he planned, in the Bastard München vs Manshine City match he is frustrated and enraged when his strategy to score a goal was taken away by Kunigami who took the opportunity and stole Isagi's clear opportunity and even more when Kaiser makes fun of him saying that he likes making passes to goal instead of making them himself, not caring anymore about showing his egoism. According to Noel Noa, Isagi has an almost identical perspective on football as Ego, as they both share a mutual obsessive desire to win, he has even begun to exhibit a similar devilish smile on his face like Ego's, whenever he's pumped up.

Abilities[]

Archetype[]

  • Raumdeuter: The word essentially translates to "space investigator", and is best used to define the effective role when exploiting the half space. A Raumdeuter's main function is to drift infield and find pockets of space in which to thrive; it is essentially a player who locates dangerous areas of the pitch and uses unoccupied space to create confusion among opposition backlines. They are limited dribblers and are not characterized by their pace. Their first touch is very efficient and is a huge contributor to their set-up touches prior to scoring.
Isagi creates ideals plays and chance opportunities by using his spatial awareness to view the field as a whole and the players on it. With his understanding of all the players he uses his off the ball movements to occupy empty spaces or create dangerous ones to form ideal plays for his teammates, chance opportunities using his teammates, and to score high level goals for himself. Mixed with his reflex and enhanced vision Isagi is able to create plays only possible for himself. Due to his relationships and game time with most of the prominent Blue Lock players, Isagi is able to bring the best out of his teammates by either forcing them to perform plays so he can attack or by them pushing themselves to exceed Isagi's evolving skill. By the time of the Neo Egoist League, players are willing to follow or use as a guide, Isagi's style of play cementing his place at the top of Blue Lock. He has been noted to be the heart of Blue Lock by Sae Itoshi and implied to be that by Ego. His skills are highly recognized and respected by a majority of Blue Lock and the world as a whole, even Jinpachi Ego comments publicly on his ability.

Skills[]

  • Spatial Awareness: Isagi instinctually begins to analyze the entire field, giving him a vast understanding of the game, including his opponents and teammates' weapons. Based on this understanding, Isagi can make accurate predictions as to the flow of the game. These premonitions then allow him to envision an ideal play midgame and execute it efficiently even when faced with strong opposition and an unpredictable field. His spatial awareness is among the highest in Blue Lock, often rivaling and sometimes surpassing other player's own visions, such as those of Niko and Rin.
    • Goal Scent: Using his spatial awareness, Isagi instinctively recognizes the "scent of a goal" that is emitted off of key players from his prediction and is able to expertly send them the ball so they may score.
    • Adaptability (適応能力 Tekiō Nōryoku?): It was noted by Naruhaya that Isagi is a genius in terms of adaptability. By understanding the core of both his teammates' and opponents' football, Isagi can adapt his style to either devour or counter their talent. Isagi has "devoured" Naruhaya's off-the-ball movements and ability to exploit blind spots, adapted so he could devour Baro and exploit his weaknesses in order to score, adjusted his thinking midgame to trick and score on Rin, a physically and technically superior player, and has also added Metavision to his repertoire.
    • Metavision (超越視界 (メタ・ビジョン) Meta Bijon?, Transcendence Sight): A term used to describe a player's evolved vision that gives them an omnipotent perspective of the field.
Using his eyes to constantly take in information from his central and peripheral vision, Isagi constantly collects data on every player, every play they make, and their positions on the field. After analyzing Michael Kaiser's goal formula, Isagi adopted Kaiser's transcendent use of his vision into his own style of play. Mixed with his spatial awareness, positioning, and reflex, Isagi is able to swiftly predict and shut down the plays of some of the best players in Blue Lock and even one of the best strikers in the world and further create ideal situations for his own goals using his teammates in a way that is only possible for him.
      • Meta Burst Point: Using his Metavision, Isagi is able to pinpoint the most critical point in the enemy's play and move in to steal the ball or stop the ball at the last second. He used this skill to great effect in the game against Manshine City.
      • Egocentrism: Isagi is able to utilize his Metavision to read and understand the motivations or "protagonism" behind people's play styles and use that understanding to further create opportunities for himself and his own team by denying the opposite team's players crucial plays that they attempt to make. Through this, Isagi is capable of anticipating, defending against, and shutting down critical, illogical, as well as even "miracle" plays that would normally be considered rational, unpredictable, and unstoppable.
  • Direct Shot (直撃蹴弾 (ダイレクトシュート) Dairekuto Shūto?, Direct Shoot): Isagi first assesses the positions of defenders and the trajectory of the ball, then lands a powerful kick on the ball's impact point in order to score a clean goal. In doing this, Isagi avoids having to overthink his positioning and next move and can just score a clean shot with no interference. It was noted by Nagi that Isagi has no wasted motion when performing his shot, implying that Isagi performs it with flawless technique and control.
    • Back Heel Shot: Isagi first assesses the positions of defenders and feints a direct shot in anticipation for his opponent's block. Then he lands a powerful backwards kick on the ball's impact point in order to score a clean shot. This move was first used against Rin Itoshi during their rematch in the Second Selection, which surprised everyone at first sight.
    • Lefty Direct Shot: Acting as a supplement or "side weapon" to his right-footed direct shot, Isagi is able to perform a left-footed direct shot when his dominant right side is blocked that is strong yet not as powerful as his right-footed direct shot.
    • 2 Stage Lefty Direct Shot: Isagi assesses the positions of defenders and feints a direct shot with his right foot, in anticipation of his shot being blocked, then proceeds to tap the ball into the air and to the side instead, to further create sufficient space to shoot freely, a lefty direct shot.
    • Two Gun Volley: An ambidextrous mid-air quickdraw that was inspired by Nagi's Juggling Shot. Isagi gets into a shooting position using one foot but fakes the shot by moving his foot over the ball midair. He then jumps and quickly performs a jumping volley direct shot with the other foot into the goal, effectively combining both his left and right footed Direct Shoots. Hiori has stated that shot to be "unstoppable" since no matter which defender comes in to block his shot, Isagi can fake them in midair and shoot after he destroys their timing. Plus, the goal keeper will have a hard time timing his shot.
  • Off-the-Ball Movements: A term used to describe the moments where players are not in possession of the ball.
Isagi may use these moments to position himself in his opponents' blind spots, position himself in a place where he can deceive the opposition and be a decoy for his teammates shots, or to position himself close enough to a teammate to pull off super close back to back passing that can breakthrough an enemy's defense.
    • Positioning: Mirroring Rin, Isagi is able to use his positioning to exploit luck during a game. If he realizes the ball will not be passed to him, Isagi will move to an opportune location, where he is in the blind spot of his opponent and where he would be able to score directly off of a direct shot. He used this to score the decisive goal in the match against the U-20.
    • Step Side Diagonal Run: While being confronted by two defenders, Isagi throws off both of their timing by faking going either left or right, and then runs through the gap between them he created.
  • Reflex (反射的 Hanshateki?): Isagi, as of the match against the Japan U-20, has begun to consciously incorporate reflex into his playmaking. Isagi is able to use his awareness of the conditions of the field to find spaces of opportunity, either to attack the opponent's goal or defend his own. He used this to instinctively move to a position where he could use a Direct Shot. After passing to Nagi, he used this to read Sae's corner kick by taking into account Sae's pass as well as Rin's and Shido's positioning, and he also demonstrated this ability at the end of the Japan U-20 match when he by reflex moved to the ball while in the blind spots of the Japan U-20 defense, scoring a powerful direct shot.
  • Flow State: Flow, as described by Ego, is the state of "total immersion" or "being in the zone." It is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.
Isagi's Flow state involves Isagi constantly using all of his weapons at once to read the field and the distortions caused by the players on it. With his Metavision, he complexly reads the field and identifies player motivations and distortions, then takes advantage of these with his spatial awareness and reflex and either mounts a surprise ironclad defense or a swift and unstoppable attack using his positioning and one touch passing. Isagi has unintentionally entered Flow State numerous times during Blue Lock, even as early as the First Selection, though his most impressive feat was entering Flow during Bastard München's game against Manshine City, taking control of the field and directly leading his team to a goal twice.
